Bring a touch of cottage-garden luxury to your borders with Lupin ‘Legendary Rose’. This eye-catching variety produces tall, elegant flower spikes in rich rose-pink tones, packed with pea-like blooms that create instant height and impact. Supplied in a 2-litre pot, it’s a strong, well-established plant that will settle in quickly and put on a fantastic display in late spring and early summer.

Lupins are brilliant for adding structure to mixed borders and they’re also a magnet for bees and other pollinators. For an even longer season, deadhead after flowering and you may be rewarded with a second flush later on. Plant alongside roses, salvia and hardy geraniums for that classic, romantic border look.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted most of the year, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun (best flowering) or light/partial shade with well-drained soil. Lupins prefer soil that is not waterlogged in winter. Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the top of the rootball is level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart to allow good airflow and sturdy growth.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the planting hole with a little garden compost if soil is very light, but avoid over-feeding as it can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes. Once settled, water during prolonged dry spells, especially when in bud and flower.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead flower spikes as they fade to encourage a second flush and to stop the plant putting energy into seed.
  • In exposed areas, use a discreet stake if needed as stems get taller.
  • Cut back finished flower stems to a strong leaf in summer; in autumn, tidy up as foliage fades.
  • Watch for slugs and snails on young shoots in spring.

Top Tip:
For a soft, romantic look, pair Lupin ‘Legendary Rose’ with white foxgloves, roses, Nepeta and silvery foliage. Plant in groups and keep deadheading for a longer flowering season.
