Delicate, elegant and beautifully fragrant, Allium ‘Cowanii’ produces loose clusters of pure white star-shaped flowers that seem to float gracefully above fresh green foliage in late spring and early summer.

Each flower head is made up of numerous sparkling white blooms with a soft sheen, creating a light and airy display that blends effortlessly into both formal and naturalistic planting schemes. Its graceful appearance makes it especially effective weaving through cottage garden borders, gravel gardens and prairie-style planting.

Originally native to the Mediterranean region, Allium ‘Cowanii’ has been cultivated in gardens for generations and remains highly valued for its natural charm, easy-going nature and ability to naturalise gently over time.

The lightly scented flowers are highly attractive to bees and pollinators, while the elegant stems also make lovely cut flowers for indoor arrangements.

Perfect for planting in generous drifts, this reliable ornamental allium brings softness, movement and freshness to sunny borders with very little maintenance.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Allium bulbs in autumn (September–November) before the ground freezes. This allows roots to establish for strong flowering the following season.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position with well-drained soil. Alliums are ideal for borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting schemes. Avoid areas where soil remains wet over winter.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with compost. In heavier soils, add grit or sharp sand to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting. Once established, Alliums require very little additional watering unless conditions are particularly dry.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb.
  • Deadhead if desired, or leave seed heads for natural interest.
  • Bulbs may gradually naturalise and form larger clumps over time.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts through borders or gravel gardens for a soft, natural effect – the pure white flowers combine beautifully with pastel perennials and ornamental grasses.
