A wonderfully versatile and easy-to-grow perennial onion, Allium fistulosum, commonly known as the Welsh Onion, produces attractive clumps of hollow green leaves topped with rounded heads of creamy-white flowers in summer.
Despite its common name, it did not originate in Wales; the name is thought to derive from an old German word meaning "foreign". This useful plant has been cultivated for centuries across Europe and Asia as both an ornamental and culinary crop.
The fresh green stems can be harvested much like spring onions, while the decorative flower heads attract bees and other pollinating insects. In the garden, it forms handsome clumps that are equally at home in ornamental borders, kitchen gardens and wildlife-friendly planting schemes.
Reliable, hardy and long-lived, Welsh Onion is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for a plant that is both beautiful and productive.
