Majestic, architectural and exceptionally eye-catching, Allium ‘Gladiator’ is one of the finest ornamental alliums for creating height and drama in the early summer garden.

Large globe-shaped flower heads, packed with hundreds of star-shaped lilac-purple florets, are held high on tall, sturdy stems above strap-like foliage. The impressive blooms can reach up to 15 cm across, creating a bold and elegant display that rises beautifully above surrounding planting.

A hybrid believed to originate from Central Asian allium species, ‘Gladiator’ has become a firm favourite in modern garden design thanks to its commanding presence and excellent garden reliability. Its strong vertical form makes it ideal for planting amongst grasses and herbaceous perennials, where the large flower heads appear to float above the border.

Perfect for mixed borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting schemes, the flowers are highly attractive to bees and pollinators and also make excellent cut or dried flowers.

Easy to grow and reliably perennial, Allium ‘Gladiator’ is a superb choice for gardeners looking to add structure, elegance and long-lasting seasonal interest to sunny borders.

RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Allium Gladiator has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit because it has proved to be reliable in appropriate conditions and a good performing plant.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Allium bulbs in autumn (September–November) before the ground freezes. This allows roots to establish for strong flowering the following season.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Alliums are ideal for borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting schemes. Avoid areas where soil remains wet over winter.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with compost. In heavier soils, add grit or sharp sand to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting. Once established, Alliums require very little additional watering unless conditions are particularly dry.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb.
  • Deadhead if desired, or leave seed heads for architectural interest.
  • Avoid excessive moisture in winter to prevent bulb rot.

Top Tip:
Plant amongst ornamental grasses or flowing perennials to highlight the dramatic globe-shaped flowers and create a striking naturalistic display.
