One of the most popular and reliable ornamental alliums, Allium hollandicum ‘Purple Sensation’ produces striking globe-shaped flower heads in rich violet-purple, held high above the border on tall, elegant stems.

Each perfectly rounded bloom is packed with masses of tiny star-shaped flowers, creating a bold architectural effect that brings structure, colour and movement to the early summer garden. Flowering just as spring bulbs begin to fade, it provides a seamless transition into the summer border.

Introduced in the early 20th century and believed to have originated from Central Asian allium species, ‘Purple Sensation’ quickly became a garden favourite thanks to its outstanding colour, strong stems and easy-going nature. It is particularly effective planted in large drifts, where the vivid purple globes appear to float above surrounding planting.

Perfect for mixed borders, gravel gardens, prairie planting and pollinator-friendly schemes, the flowers are highly attractive to bees and beneficial insects and also make excellent cut or dried flowers.

Easy to grow and wonderfully versatile, this classic allium remains one of the finest varieties for adding bold colour and architectural interest to sunny borders.

RHS Award of Garden Merit.

This plant/cultivar has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit because it has proved to be reliable in appropriate conditions and a good performing plant.

Regrettably the last few bulbs are smaller than we expected. They will still flower.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Allium bulbs in autumn (September–November) before the ground freezes. This allows roots to establish for strong flowering the following season.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Alliums are ideal for borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting schemes. Avoid areas where soil remains wet over winter.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with compost. In heavier soils, add grit or sharp sand to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting. Once established, Alliums require very little additional watering unless conditions are particularly dry.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb.
  • Leave seed heads standing for decorative interest if desired.
  • Avoid excessive moisture in winter to prevent bulb rot.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts through borders or amongst ornamental grasses for a spectacular sea of floating purple flower heads in early summer.
