Bright, cheerful and wonderfully easy to grow, Allium moly produces clusters of star-shaped golden-yellow flowers that light up the garden in late spring and early summer.

This charming dwarf allium forms loose umbels of vivid yellow blooms held above attractive grey-green foliage, creating a natural and relaxed display that blends beautifully into a wide range of planting styles. Smaller and softer in appearance than many ornamental alliums, it is perfect for weaving through borders, gravel gardens and rockeries.

Native to southern Europe, particularly Spain and the Mediterranean region, Allium moly has been cultivated in gardens for centuries and remains highly valued for its reliability, drought tolerance and ability to naturalise gently over time.

The nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to bees and pollinators, while its compact size makes it ideal for the front of borders, containers and naturalistic planting schemes.

Easy to grow and full of sunny colour, Allium moly is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for a low-maintenance allium with a relaxed, natural feel.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Allium bulbs in autumn (September–November) before the ground freezes. This allows roots to establish for strong flowering the following season.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position with well-drained soil. Allium moly is ideal for gravel gardens, borders, rockeries and naturalistic planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs about 6–8 cm (2–3 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with grit or sharp sand if drainage is poor. Alliums prefer lighter, free-draining soils.

Watering:
Water after planting. Once established, Allium moly requires very little additional watering except during prolonged dry periods.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb.
  • Deadhead if desired, or leave seed heads for natural interest.
  • Bulbs may gradually naturalise and spread gently over time.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts through gravel gardens or sunny borders for a cheerful splash of golden-yellow colour that returns year after year.
