One of the most unusual and eye-catching ornamental alliums available, Allium ‘Red Mohican’ produces striking egg-shaped flower heads topped with a distinctive tuft of deep burgundy-red florets, giving the blooms their dramatic “mohican” appearance.

As the flowers mature, the lower portion opens into soft silvery-pink and cream tones, creating a remarkable two-tone effect that changes beautifully throughout the flowering period. Held on sturdy upright stems above neat foliage, the blooms bring both architectural structure and playful character to the summer border.

A modern ornamental allium bred for its unique colouring and form, ‘Red Mohican’ has quickly become a favourite amongst designers of naturalistic and prairie-style planting schemes. The unusual flower heads combine exceptionally well with ornamental grasses and airy perennial planting.

Perfect for sunny borders, gravel gardens and pollinator-friendly planting, the flowers are highly attractive to bees and beneficial insects while also making excellent cut or dried flowers.

Easy to grow and wonderfully distinctive, Allium ‘Red Mohican’ is ideal for gardeners looking to add something truly different to the early summer garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Allium bulbs in autumn (September–November) before the ground freezes. This allows roots to establish for strong flowering the following season.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Alliums are ideal for borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting schemes. Avoid areas where soil remains wet over winter.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with compost. In heavier soils, add grit or sharp sand to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting. Once established, Alliums require very little additional watering unless conditions are particularly dry.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb.
  • Leave seed heads standing for decorative interest if desired.
  • Avoid excessive moisture in winter to prevent bulb rot.

Top Tip:
Plant amongst ornamental grasses or airy perennials where the unusual flower heads can be fully appreciated and create maximum visual impact.
