Tall, elegant and truly spectacular, Allium ‘Summer Drummer’ is one of the most impressive ornamental alliums for adding height, structure and long-lasting architectural beauty to the summer garden.

Large globe-shaped flower heads are made up of hundreds of tiny star-shaped florets in soft lilac, pink and white tones, creating a beautifully textured and shimmering effect. The huge blooms are carried on exceptionally tall, sturdy stems that rise dramatically above surrounding planting, making this variety a true focal point in borders.

A hybrid ornamental allium bred from giant Central Asian species, ‘Summer Drummer’ is admired for both its immense stature and graceful colouring. Flowering later than many traditional alliums, it extends the allium season beautifully into early summer.

Perfect for sunny borders, prairie-style planting, gravel gardens and naturalistic schemes, the flowers attract large numbers of bees and pollinators while the decorative seed heads continue to provide interest long after flowering has finished.

Striking yet elegant, Allium ‘Summer Drummer’ is ideal for gardeners looking to create dramatic vertical impact with very little maintenance.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Allium bulbs in autumn (September–November) before the ground freezes. This allows roots to establish for strong flowering the following season.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Alliums are ideal for borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting schemes. Avoid areas where soil remains wet over winter.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with compost. In heavier soils, add grit or sharp sand to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting. Once established, Alliums require very little additional watering unless conditions are particularly dry.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb.
  • Leave seed heads standing for long-lasting architectural interest.
  • Avoid excessive moisture in winter to prevent bulb rot.

Top Tip:
Plant towards the back of borders or amongst ornamental grasses where the towering flower stems can rise dramatically above surrounding planting.
