One of the most spectacular of all florist's anemones, Anemone coronaria 'Governor' produces large, semi-double flowers in rich scarlet-red, beautifully accented by crisp white highlights around the centre and a striking dark eye.

A long-established favourite, 'Governor' is renowned for its bold colour, impressive flower size and exceptional performance in the garden and vase. The vibrant blooms stand proudly above finely divided fern-like foliage, creating a dazzling display throughout spring and early summer.

Originally developed from wild Mediterranean species, Anemone coronaria has been cultivated for centuries and remains one of the finest cut flowers available. The semi-double blooms of 'Governor' are particularly eye-catching, adding both depth and texture to borders, containers and floral arrangements.

Plant in generous groups for maximum impact, where the vivid red flowers will create a striking display and attract early pollinating insects to the garden.

A superb choice for cutting gardens, spring borders and patio containers.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Anemone coronaria corms in autumn or spring. For best results, soak the corms in lukewarm water for several hours before planting to encourage quicker establishment.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Anemones are ideal for borders, containers, cutting gardens and naturalised planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms approximately 5 cm (2 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space corms about 10 cm (4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Incorporate compost or organic matter before planting. Improve heavy soils with grit to aid drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil lightly moist while growth is developing. Avoid waterlogged conditions.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent flowers to prolong flowering.
  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Apply a winter mulch in colder areas for additional protection.

Top Tip:
Plant in drifts of 15–25 corms for a spectacular display of vibrant red blooms and an abundance of long-lasting cut flowers.
