Widely regarded as one of the finest woodland plants, Anemone nemorosa 'Robinsoniana' produces enchanting flowers in the softest lavender-blue, creating a breathtaking carpet of colour beneath trees and shrubs in spring.

Discovered in the late 19th century in a garden near Oxford and named after the amateur gardener William Robinson, this beautiful selection is considered one of the best blue forms of the native Wood Anemone. The delicate flowers open wide in sunshine, revealing pale golden stamens at their centre, while the reverse of the petals often carries subtle silver and lilac tones.

Like the native Wood Anemone, 'Robinsoniana' gradually spreads through underground rhizomes, forming increasingly impressive colonies over time. Its soft colouring blends effortlessly with spring bulbs, ferns, primroses and other woodland plants, creating a naturalistic and timeless display.

Perfect for woodland gardens, shaded borders and planting beneath deciduous trees, this charming perennial provides valuable early-season nectar for pollinating insects while bringing elegance and tranquillity to the spring garden.

A truly classic woodland plant that becomes more beautiful with every passing year.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Anemone nemorosa 'Robinsoniana' rhizomes in autumn, winter or early spring while dormant. Plant as soon as possible after receipt for best results.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or full shade with moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Ideal beneath deciduous trees, in woodland gardens or along shady borders.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant rhizomes approximately 3–5 cm (1–2 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space rhizomes about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with plenty of leaf mould, compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water well after planting and keep the soil lightly moist during establishment. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely during the growing season.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Apply an annual mulch of leaf mould or compost to recreate natural woodland conditions.
  • Once established, plants will gradually spread to form beautiful drifts.

Top Tip:
Plant among snowdrops, primroses and ferns for a classic woodland display that improves year after year.
