A charming and rarely seen woodland treasure, Anemone ranunculoides, commonly known as the Yellow Wood Anemone, produces cheerful buttercup-yellow flowers that brighten the garden in early spring.

Closely related to the native Wood Anemone (Anemone nemorosa), this delightful species is native to woodlands across Europe and is prized for its ability to form natural drifts of golden flowers beneath trees and shrubs. The star-shaped blooms appear above finely divided foliage and create a striking contrast against the fresh greens of spring.

Unlike its white-flowered cousin, the Yellow Wood Anemone brings warm, sunny tones to woodland planting schemes and combines beautifully with blue-flowered forms such as Anemone nemorosa 'Robinsoniana', primroses, ferns and spring bulbs.

Over time, the rhizomes gradually spread to form attractive colonies, making this an excellent choice for naturalising in woodland gardens, shady borders and beneath deciduous trees. The early flowers also provide a valuable source of nectar and pollen for emerging pollinating insects.

Easy to grow and wonderfully rewarding, Anemone ranunculoides is a delightful addition to any spring garden and a plant that only becomes more beautiful with age.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Anemone ranunculoides rhizomes in autumn, winter or early spring while dormant. Plant as soon as possible after receipt for best results.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or full shade with moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Ideal beneath deciduous trees, in woodland gardens or along shady borders.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant rhizomes approximately 3–5 cm (1–2 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space rhizomes about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with plenty of leaf mould, compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water well after planting and keep the soil lightly moist during establishment. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely during the growing season.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Apply an annual mulch of leaf mould or compost to recreate woodland conditions.
  • Once established, plants will gradually spread to form attractive colonies.

Top Tip:
Plant alongside blue Wood Anemones, primroses and snowdrops for a natural woodland display full of spring colour.
