A magnificent and statuesque bulb, Camassia leichtlinii caerulea produces tall spires of elegant star-shaped flowers in beautiful shades of soft lavender-blue to violet-blue during late spring and early summer.

Among the finest of all Camassias, this distinguished selection bears dozens of flowers on each sturdy stem, opening gradually from the bottom upwards to create a display that lasts for many weeks. The delicate blooms seem to float above clumps of fresh green strap-like foliage, bringing both height and grace to borders and naturalistic planting schemes.

Native to the damp meadows and open grasslands of western North America, Camassias have long been valued for their ability to thrive in soils that remain moist during spring. Unlike many spring bulbs, they are particularly well suited to areas that do not dry out quickly, making them invaluable for difficult spots where other bulbs may struggle.

The flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects and combine beautifully with ornamental grasses, alliums, irises and cottage garden perennials. Over time, the bulbs form increasingly impressive clumps, rewarding gardeners with larger displays each year.

Elegant, reliable and easy to grow, Camassia leichtlinii caerulea is one of the finest blue-flowering bulbs for late spring colour.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Camassia bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil remains warm and workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Camassias are ideal for borders, meadows and areas that remain reliably moist during spring.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting to help retain moisture and improve fertility.

Watering:
Water after planting and during prolonged dry spells in spring. Camassias appreciate moisture while actively growing and flowering.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Apply a mulch of compost or organic matter each autumn.
  • Leave established clumps undisturbed for many years for the best displays.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous groups for a breathtaking display of blue flower spikes that will return reliably year after year.
