One of the finest white crocuses for the spring garden, Crocus chrysanthus 'Ard Schenk' produces pristine, snow-white flowers that sparkle in the early spring sunshine.

Introduced in the Netherlands and named after the famous Dutch speed skater Ard Schenk, this award-winning variety has become a favourite among gardeners for its pure colour, reliability and early flowering habit. The elegant goblet-shaped blooms emerge from late winter onwards, often appearing when little else is in flower, bringing welcome brightness to borders, rock gardens, lawns and containers.

As a member of the Snow Crocus group, 'Ard Schenk' is smaller and earlier flowering than the larger Dutch Crocuses. Its neat habit makes it ideal for naturalising, where it gradually forms beautiful drifts of white flowers year after year. On sunny days, the blooms open wide to reveal golden-orange stamens that provide a valuable source of nectar and pollen for early bees and other pollinating insects.

Easy to grow and wonderfully rewarding, this charming crocus is perfect for bringing a touch of elegance to the earliest days of spring.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Crocus corms in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Crocuses are ideal for borders, rock gardens, containers and naturalising in lawns.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms approximately 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space corms about 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to ensure good drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Crocus corms require very little additional watering.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • If planted in grass, avoid mowing until the leaves have yellowed.
  • Leave clumps undisturbed to allow natural multiplication.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts beneath deciduous trees or through lawns for a beautiful carpet of white flowers in late winter and early spring.
