One of the most distinctive and eye-catching crocuses you can grow, Crocus olivieri subsp. balansae 'Orange Monarch' produces remarkable flowers in glowing shades of rich orange, amber and golden-yellow, bringing warmth and vibrancy to the late winter garden.

Unlike the more familiar purple and white crocuses, 'Orange Monarch' stands out for its unusual colouring. The outer petals display warm bronze-orange tones, while the interiors glow with bright golden-orange shades that seem to light up even on the dullest winter days. When the flowers open fully in sunshine, they create a dazzling display that is impossible to overlook.

Flowering from late winter into early spring, this charming species crocus is ideal for rock gardens, alpine beds, borders, containers and naturalising in short grass. Despite its delicate appearance, it is fully hardy and remarkably easy to grow, gradually increasing to form attractive clumps over time.

The nectar-rich flowers are among the earliest sources of food for bees and other pollinating insects emerging after winter, making this variety as valuable for wildlife as it is beautiful in the garden.

A truly unique crocus that brings an unusual splash of colour to the earliest days of the gardening year.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Crocus corms in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Species crocuses are perfect for rock gardens, alpine beds, borders, containers and naturalising in lawns.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms approximately 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space corms about 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to ensure excellent drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting to settle the soil. Once established, crocuses require very little additional watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • If planted in grass, avoid mowing until the foliage has yellowed.
  • Leave clumps undisturbed to encourage natural multiplication.

Top Tip:
Plant alongside blue and purple crocuses for a spectacular contrast that really highlights the unique orange colouring.
