Crocus vernus Remembrance

Rich, velvety and wonderfully elegant, Crocus vernus 'Remembrance' produces large, goblet-shaped flowers in deep royal purple, bringing dramatic colour to the garden at the very beginning of spring.

Introduced in the early 20th century and still regarded as one of the finest purple Dutch Crocuses, 'Remembrance' is treasured for its intense colouring and reliable performance. The richly coloured blooms emerge in late winter and early spring, opening wide on sunny days to reveal vivid orange stamens that create a striking contrast against the dark petals.

As a member of the Dutch Crocus group, 'Remembrance' bears impressively large flowers that stand out beautifully in borders, containers and naturalised drifts. Its deep purple colouring makes it particularly effective when planted alongside white varieties such as 'Jeanne d'Arc' or yellow varieties such as 'Golden Yellow', creating classic spring combinations that never fail to impress.

Easy to grow and long-lived, the corms gradually multiply over time, producing increasingly impressive displays year after year. The flowers also provide valuable early nectar and pollen for bees emerging from winter.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Crocus vernus corms in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Dutch Crocuses are ideal for borders, rock gardens, containers and naturalising in lawns.

How to Plant:

• Depth: Plant corms approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
• Spacing: Space corms about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
• Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to ensure good drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Crocus corms require very little additional watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

• Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
• If planted in lawns, avoid mowing until the leaves have yellowed completely.
• Leave clumps undisturbed to encourage natural multiplication.
