A truly magnificent autumn-flowering crocus, Crocus speciosus 'Conqueror' is widely regarded as one of the finest varieties available. Its exceptionally large flowers are a rich violet-blue, beautifully veined with deeper purple and highlighted by vivid orange stamens.

Flowering when much of the garden is beginning to fade, 'Conqueror' provides a welcome burst of colour from September onwards. The goblet-shaped blooms open wide on sunny days, creating a striking display in borders, lawns, rock gardens and containers. Its flowers are noticeably larger and more intensely coloured than those of the species, making it a particularly valuable garden variety.

Originally selected from the beautiful Crocus speciosus, 'Conqueror' has become a favourite among gardeners for its vigour, reliability and outstanding flower size. Given suitable conditions, the corms will gradually multiply, creating impressive drifts of colour that return year after year.

Ideal for naturalising beneath deciduous trees, weaving through borders or planting in generous groups, this superb crocus extends the flowering season well into autumn while providing valuable nectar for late pollinating insects.

A deservedly popular variety and one of the finest autumn crocuses you can grow.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Crocus speciosus 'Conqueror' corms in late summer to early autumn, ideally between August and September, for flowering later the same year.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Ideal for borders, lawns, rock gardens, woodland edges and containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space corms about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to ensure good drainage and prevent winter wet.

Watering:
Water after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Crocus speciosus 'Conqueror' requires very little additional watering except during prolonged dry periods.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally in spring.
  • If planted in lawns, avoid mowing until the foliage has yellowed.
  • Leave clumps undisturbed to allow natural multiplication.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts beneath deciduous trees or among low-growing perennials where the large autumn flowers can create a spectacular late-season display.
