A stunning large-flowered crocus, Crocus vernus 'Blue Ocean' produces beautifully proportioned blooms in shimmering shades of lavender-blue and soft violet, creating a striking display in early spring.

Part of the Dutch Crocus group, 'Blue Ocean' bears significantly larger flowers than the earlier Snow Crocuses, making it particularly effective in borders, containers and naturalised drifts. The elegant goblet-shaped blooms open fully in sunshine, revealing bright golden-orange stamens that contrast beautifully against the cool blue petals.

Flowering just as the garden begins to burst into life, this reliable variety provides an important source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects. Its clear colouring combines effortlessly with white, yellow and purple spring bulbs, making it an excellent choice for mixed displays.

Easy to grow and wonderfully dependable, 'Blue Ocean' performs equally well in lawns, rockeries, borders and containers. Over time, the corms multiply steadily, producing larger and more impressive displays each year.

A beautiful crocus that captures the freshness and optimism of spring.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Crocus vernus corms in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Dutch Crocuses are ideal for borders, rock gardens, containers and naturalising in lawns.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space corms about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to ensure good drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Crocus corms require very little additional watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • If planted in lawns, avoid mowing until the leaves have yellowed completely.
  • Leave clumps undisturbed to encourage natural multiplication.

Top Tip:
Plant alongside white crocuses and early daffodils for a fresh and uplifting spring display.
