A truly regal woodland perennial, Erythronium 'Purple King' produces elegant, nodding flowers in rich rosy-purple shades above beautifully marbled foliage during spring.

One of the finest and most popular Dog's Tooth Violets, this exceptional hybrid is prized for its large flowers, strong growth and reliable garden performance. The graceful blooms feature swept-back petals in vibrant shades of pinkish-purple to mauve, surrounding prominent dark stamens that add further drama and sophistication.

The attractive foliage emerges early in the season, displaying distinctive mottling and marbling that provides interest even before the flowers appear. As the blooms hover above the leaves on slender stems, they create a natural elegance that perfectly suits woodland gardens and shaded borders.

Unlike some Erythroniums that can be slow to establish, 'Purple King' is noted for its vigour and ability to form impressive clumps over time. It combines beautifully with Ferns, Primroses, Anemones, Trilliums and other shade-loving woodland plants.

A long-lived and highly rewarding perennial, this superb variety brings colour, grace and refinement to the spring garden year after year.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Erythronium bulbs in autumn as soon as possible after receipt. Erythronium bulbs dislike drying out and should not be left out of the ground for extended periods.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or dappled woodland shade with moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Ideal beneath deciduous trees, shrubs or in woodland-style borders.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 15 cm (6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the soil with plenty of leaf mould, compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil moist during active growth in spring. Avoid waterlogged conditions.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Apply an annual mulch of leaf mould or compost to maintain soil fertility and moisture.
  • Leave clumps undisturbed wherever possible, as they become more impressive with age.

Top Tip:
Plant alongside Ferns, Trilliums and Anemone nemorosa for a stunning woodland display with contrasting textures and colours.
