A truly elegant and unusual Crown Imperial, Fritillaria imperialis 'Early Passion' produces beautiful pendent bells of soft primrose-yellow, delicately washed and shaded with warm bronze and honey tones at the base of each flower.
Flowering earlier than many traditional Crown Imperials, this distinctive variety brings colour and architectural interest to the spring garden from mid-spring onwards. The graceful bell-shaped flowers hang beneath a crown of fresh green leaves, creating the instantly recognisable silhouette that has made Fritillaria imperialis a favourite of gardeners for centuries.
Unlike the bold oranges and reds often associated with Crown Imperials, 'Early Passion' offers a more subtle and refined colour palette. The gentle yellow flowers blend beautifully with tulips, narcissus and other spring bulbs, while the bronzed undertones add depth and sophistication. Its slightly more compact habit also makes it easier to incorporate into mixed borders and smaller gardens.
Originally descended from plants native to the mountainous regions of Turkey, Iran and the Himalayas, Crown Imperials have been cultivated in European gardens since the 16th century and remain among the most striking spring-flowering bulbs available.
A superb choice for gardeners seeking something elegant, unusual and full of spring character.
When to Plant:
Plant Crown Imperial bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil remains workable.
Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, free-draining soil. Crown Imperials dislike sitting in wet soil during winter and perform best where drainage is excellent.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water after planting to settle the soil. Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells, as excessive moisture around the bulbs can cause rot.
Aftercare Tips:
Top Tip:
Plant bulbs slightly on their side when planting. This helps prevent water collecting in the hollow crown of the bulb and reduces the risk of rot.
Flowering Period:
April – May (depending on season and conditions)
