One of the most spectacular spring bulbs available, Fritillaria imperialis 'Aurora' produces magnificent pendant bells in glowing shades of burnt orange, apricot and copper, crowned with a dramatic tuft of fresh green foliage.

A classic Crown Imperial, 'Aurora' commands attention wherever it is planted. The large, bell-shaped flowers hang in a circular cluster beneath the leafy crown, creating an exotic and architectural display that has captivated gardeners since Crown Imperials were first introduced into Europe during the 16th century.

The rich orange flowers possess remarkable depth and warmth, their colour shifting subtly between copper, amber and apricot tones depending on the light. Rising proudly above spring borders, they provide a striking focal point and combine beautifully with tulips, alliums and late-flowering narcissus.

Native to the mountainous regions of Turkey, Iran and the Himalayas, Crown Imperials are renowned for their bold presence and reliability. Their distinctive scent is also said to help deter moles and rodents, making them particularly useful in bulb plantings.

A dramatic and unforgettable spring performer that brings height, structure and vibrant colour to the garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Crown Imperial bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil remains workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, free-draining soil. Crown Imperials dislike winter waterlogging and perform best where drainage is excellent.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve drainage with grit or sharp sand if planting in heavy soils. Add compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water after planting to settle the soil. Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells, as excessive moisture around the bulbs can cause rot.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Apply a mulch of compost annually to maintain soil fertility.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed wherever possible, as they dislike frequent lifting.

Top Tip:
Plant bulbs slightly on their side when planting. This helps prevent water collecting in the hollow crown of the bulb and reduces the risk of rot.
