Elegant, graceful and highly sought after, Fritillaria meleagris 'Alba' is the pure white form of the beloved Snake's Head Fritillary, producing exquisite nodding bell-shaped flowers that seem to float above slender stems in spring.

Unlike the chequered purple flowers of the species, 'Alba' bears pristine ivory-white blooms, often with the faintest hint of green veining. The delicate flowers hang gracefully from arching stems, creating an effect of remarkable elegance and refinement. Their simple purity makes them particularly striking in woodland gardens, damp meadows and naturalistic plantings.

Native forms of Fritillaria meleagris have long been associated with Britain's ancient floodplain meadows, and this beautiful white selection brings all the charm of the species with an added sense of sophistication. When planted in drifts, the flowers create a magical display that appears almost luminous amongst fresh spring greenery.

Ideal for naturalising in grass, beneath deciduous trees or in moisture-retentive borders, Fritillaria meleagris 'Alba' will gradually establish and spread under suitable conditions, returning year after year with increasing beauty.

A truly enchanting spring bulb that combines delicacy, elegance and timeless charm.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Fritillaria meleagris 'Alba' bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil remains workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Snake's Head Fritillaries are particularly well suited to damp meadows, lawns, orchard grass and naturalistic planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve light soils with organic matter to help retain moisture. Avoid very dry sites.

Watering:
Water after planting to settle the soil. Keep the soil reasonably moist during active growth and flowering, particularly during dry springs.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • If planted in grass, delay mowing until the leaves have yellowed completely.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed to allow natural multiplication and self-seeding.

Top Tip:
Plant amongst bluebells, white narcissus and woodland perennials for a stunning spring display full of contrast and elegance.
