A true classic among double snowdrops, Galanthus 'Jacquenetta' is cherished for its elegant, fully double flowers and delightful honey fragrance. Producing graceful, nodding blooms with layers of pristine white petals beautifully highlighted by rich green markings, this charming variety brings welcome colour and refinement to the garden during the coldest months of the year.

Introduced by the renowned plantswoman Heyrick Greatorex in the 1950s, 'Jacquenetta' is one of the celebrated Greatorex Doubles, a distinguished group of snowdrops named after characters from Shakespeare's plays. It has remained a favourite with gardeners for decades thanks to its vigorous growth, reliable flowering and timeless beauty.

Flowering from late winter into early spring, the blooms are carried above neat grey-green foliage and provide an important early nectar source for bees emerging on warmer days. Over time, 'Jacquenetta' forms handsome clumps, making it ideal for naturalising beneath deciduous trees, along woodland paths or in shaded borders where its intricate flowers can be admired up close.

Combining historic charm with outstanding garden performance, Galanthus 'Jacquenetta' is an excellent choice for both collectors and anyone wishing to brighten the winter garden with elegant double flowers.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Galanthus bulbs in autumn (September–November), or plant "in the green" immediately after flowering in late winter or early spring for the quickest establishment.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or dappled woodland shade with moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. 'Jacquenetta' is perfect for woodland gardens, beneath deciduous trees, shaded borders and naturalised planting.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs around 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the soil with leaf mould, compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting to retain moisture while ensuring good drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Once established, rainfall is generally sufficient, although snowdrops appreciate moist soil while actively growing.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following year's display.
  • Lift and divide mature clumps every 4–5 years after flowering if they become overcrowded.
  • Apply a light mulch of compost or leaf mould each autumn to encourage healthy, vigorous growth.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Jacquenetta' near pathways, patios or entrances where its beautifully layered flowers and delicate honey fragrance can be enjoyed during the darkest months of the year.
