A treasured heirloom that has graced gardens for over 300 years, Galanthus nivalis 'Flore Pleno' is one of the oldest cultivated double snowdrops and remains one of the finest. Its charming, nodding blooms are composed of layers of pristine white petals, delicately marked with soft green, creating elegant miniature rosettes that brighten the winter garden.

Introduced into cultivation in the early 18th century, 'Flore Pleno' has become a firm favourite with gardeners and collectors alike for its reliability, vigour and graceful beauty. Flowering from late winter into early spring, the lightly honey-scented blooms are carried on slender stems above narrow grey-green foliage, often pushing through frozen ground or even snow to announce the arrival of spring.

Unlike many ornamental bulbs, Galanthus nivalis 'Flore Pleno' is exceptionally long-lived and naturalises readily, gradually forming impressive carpets beneath deciduous trees, along woodland paths or in shady borders. The early flowers are also an invaluable source of nectar for bees emerging on mild winter days.

Easy to grow and wonderfully dependable, this classic double snowdrop is an essential addition to any spring garden and becomes even more beautiful as the clumps mature over the years.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Galanthus bulbs in autumn (September–November), or plant "in the green" immediately after flowering in late winter or early spring for the quickest establishment.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or dappled woodland shade with moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. Snowdrops are ideal beneath deciduous trees, along woodland paths, in shady borders or naturalised in lawns.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs around 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Incorporate leaf mould, compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting to improve moisture retention and soil structure.

Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Once established, rainfall is usually sufficient, although bulbs appreciate moist soil during their growing season.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for next year.
  • Lift and divide overcrowded clumps every 4–5 years after flowering if required.
  • A yearly mulch of leaf mould or compost will help maintain healthy, vigorous plants.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts beneath deciduous trees or shrubs where the delicate double flowers can spread naturally, creating a beautiful late winter carpet year after year.
