One of the most elegant and distinctive snowdrops, Galanthus woronowii is immediately recognisable by its broad, glossy apple-green leaves and graceful, nodding white flowers. Flowering in late winter, it brings welcome colour and hope to the garden just as the first signs of spring begin to appear.

Native to the woodlands of the eastern Black Sea region in Georgia, north-eastern Turkey and the Caucasus, Galanthus woronowii was named in honour of the Russian botanist Georg Woronow. Unlike the more familiar Common Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis), its lush, vibrant green foliage remains attractive throughout the flowering period, providing a beautiful backdrop to the delicate white blooms.

The elegant flowers, with their characteristic green markings on the inner petals, are lightly honey-scented and provide an invaluable early source of nectar for bees emerging on mild winter days. Over time, this hardy perennial will naturalise readily, forming beautiful colonies beneath deciduous trees, woodland edges and shaded borders.

Awarded the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Galanthus woronowii is easy to grow, exceptionally reliable and one of the finest snowdrops for creating natural drifts that become more impressive every year.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Galanthus bulbs in autumn (September–November), or plant "in the green" immediately after flowering in late winter or early spring for the quickest establishment.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or dappled woodland shade with moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. Galanthus woronowii is ideal beneath deciduous trees, woodland gardens, shady borders and naturalised lawns.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs around 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the soil with leaf mould, compost or well-rotted organic matter to help retain moisture while maintaining good drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Once established, rainfall is usually sufficient, although plants appreciate moist soil during their growing season.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for next year's display.
  • Lift and divide congested clumps every 4–5 years after flowering if required.
  • Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each autumn to maintain healthy, vigorous plants.

Top Tip:
Plant Galanthus woronowii in generous drifts beneath deciduous trees where its broad, glossy foliage and elegant white flowers will gradually form beautiful natural colonies each spring.
