A truly eye-catching variety, Hippeastrum 'Amadeus Candy' produces magnificent, oversized blooms in a delicious blend of soft candy-pink and creamy white. Each broad petal is delicately brushed with raspberry-pink, creating a beautifully striped effect that makes every flower unique.

Often referred to as an Amaryllis, Hippeastrum has been a favourite winter-flowering bulb since the Victorian era, when it was prized for bringing spectacular colour into the home during the darker months. 'Amadeus Candy' continues that tradition with elegant trumpet-shaped flowers that can reach up to 20cm (8 inches) across, held proudly on sturdy stems above glossy green foliage.

Each premium bulb typically produces two flowering stems, each carrying three to five impressive blooms, providing weeks of colour indoors. Its soft pastel tones make it a wonderful addition to festive displays while also complementing modern interiors throughout winter.

Easy to grow and exceptionally rewarding, 'Amadeus Candy' also makes a thoughtful gift, producing an unforgettable floral display with very little effort.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Hippeastrum bulbs indoors from October through to February for spectacular flowers during winter and early spring. Bulbs usually flower around 6–10 weeks after planting.

Where to Plant:
Choose a bright, warm location, such as a sunny windowsill or conservatory, where temperatures remain between 18–22°C. Hippeastrums perform best indoors and should be protected from frost.

How to Plant:

  • Pot Size: Choose a pot only slightly larger than the bulb, leaving around 2–3 cm around the sides.
  • Depth: Plant with the top third of the bulb above the compost surface.
  • Compost: Use a good quality, free-draining potting compost and ensure the pot has drainage holes.

Watering:
Water lightly after planting, then only water again once new growth appears. Increase watering as the flower stem develops, keeping the compost lightly moist but never waterlogged.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Turn the pot every few days to encourage straight flower stems.
  • Feed weekly with a liquid fertiliser once the leaves appear.
  • After flowering, remove spent blooms but leave the foliage to grow naturally, as it replenishes the bulb for next year's display.
  • Reduce watering in late summer and allow the bulb to rest for 8–10 weeks before restarting the growing cycle.

Top Tip:
Keeping the bulb slightly pot-bound encourages stronger flowering, while rotating the pot regularly prevents the stems leaning towards the light.
