Bold, elegant and wonderfully dramatic, Hippeastrum 'Amarantia' produces magnificent velvety blooms in rich crimson-red with a subtle satiny sheen. The large, star-shaped flowers are beautifully formed with gently pointed petals, creating a refined and contemporary look that makes a striking statement indoors.

Commonly known as the Amaryllis, Hippeastrums have been treasured since the Victorian era for their spectacular winter displays. 'Amarantia' is no exception, producing impressive flowers up to 20cm (8 inches) across on sturdy stems that rise gracefully above glossy green foliage.

Each premium bulb will usually produce two flowering stems, each carrying three to five luxurious blooms, ensuring a long-lasting display throughout the winter months. Its rich colouring makes it particularly popular for festive decorations, while its elegant form complements both traditional and modern interiors.

Easy to grow and rewarding for gardeners of all abilities, 'Amarantia' is perfect for brightening your home during the colder months and also makes a thoughtful and impressive gift.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Hippeastrum bulbs indoors from October through to February for spectacular flowers during winter and early spring. Bulbs usually flower around 6–10 weeks after planting.

Where to Plant:
Choose a bright, warm location, such as a sunny windowsill or conservatory, where temperatures remain between 18–22°C. Hippeastrums are grown indoors and should always be protected from frost.

How to Plant:

  • Pot Size: Choose a pot only slightly larger than the bulb, leaving approximately 2–3 cm around the sides.
  • Depth: Plant with the top third of the bulb above the compost surface.
  • Compost: Use a good quality, free-draining potting compost and ensure the pot has drainage holes.

Watering:
Water lightly after planting, then wait until new growth appears before watering again. Increase watering as the flower stem develops, keeping the compost lightly moist but never waterlogged.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Turn the pot every few days to encourage upright flower stems.
  • Feed weekly with a balanced liquid fertiliser once the leaves begin to grow.
  • Remove faded flowers after blooming but leave the foliage to grow naturally, allowing the bulb to build strength for next year.
  • Reduce watering in late summer and allow the bulb to rest for 8–10 weeks before beginning the next growing cycle.

Top Tip:
Place 'Amarantia' against pale walls or in simple ceramic pots to allow its rich crimson flowers to become the centrepiece of your winter display.
