Hippeastrum Papillio

Unlike any other Amaryllis, Hippeastrum papilio, commonly known as the Butterfly Amaryllis, is a truly remarkable species prized for its exotic, orchid-like flowers and elegant, long-lasting blooms.

Native to the rainforests of southern Brazil, this unusual species produces large, butterfly-shaped flowers with striking greenish-white petals intricately striped and feathered with rich burgundy-red. The graceful, arching blooms appear almost suspended in mid-air, giving the plant an elegant, tropical appearance that makes it an exceptional feature indoors.

Unlike many hybrid Hippeastrums, Hippeastrum papilio is an evergreen species, often retaining its attractive strap-like foliage throughout the year. Each mature bulb can produce several flowering stems over time, with blooms lasting for many weeks and often appearing more than once a year under favourable conditions.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Hippeastrum papilio indoors at almost any time of year, although autumn and winter planting is ideal for flowering during the colder months.

Where to Plant:
Choose a bright position with indirect light or gentle morning sunshine. Maintain temperatures between 18–24°C and protect the plant from frost and cold draughts.

How to Plant:

• Pot Size: Use a pot only slightly larger than the bulb, allowing approximately 2–3 cm around the sides.
• Depth: Plant with the top third of the bulb above the compost surface.
• Compost: Use a high-quality, free-draining compost. Adding a little perlite or horticultural grit will improve drainage.

Watering:
Water lightly after planting. Once active growth begins, keep the compost lightly moist but never saturated. Hippeastrum papilio prefers consistent moisture while growing but dislikes sitting in wet compost.

Aftercare Tips:

• Feed every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser during active growth.
• Unlike many hybrid Hippeastrums, do not allow Hippeastrum papilio to dry out completely, as it is naturally evergreen.
• Remove spent flower stems after flowering but retain the healthy leaves to support future blooms.
• Repot every 3–4 years or when the bulb becomes crowded.

Top Tip:
Hippeastrum papilio enjoys warm, humid conditions. Placing the pot on a tray of damp pebbles can help increase humidity and encourage healthy growth without leaving the bulb sitting in water.
