One of the finest and most fragrant garden hyacinths ever introduced, Hyacinthus 'Blue Jacket' produces magnificent, densely packed flower spikes in rich royal-blue, creating a spectacular display of colour and perfume in the spring garden.

A long-established favourite, 'Blue Jacket' is renowned for its large, upright flower heads composed of dozens of star-shaped florets. The deep blue blooms have a subtle violet sheen that catches the light beautifully, while their rich, sweet fragrance fills the surrounding air, making this one of the most aromatic spring bulbs you can grow.

Perfect for borders, containers, patio pots and indoor forcing, this award-winning variety brings both elegance and impact wherever it is planted. The sturdy stems stand well in the garden and also make exceptional cut flowers, filling the home with their unmistakable perfume.

Whether planted in generous drifts, grouped in formal beds or enjoyed in decorative pots, Hyacinthus 'Blue Jacket' is a true spring classic that combines bold colour with unforgettable fragrance.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Hyacinth bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Hyacinths are excellent for borders, containers, patio pots and can also be grown indoors for winter flowering.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter. In heavy soils, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. During active growth, keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flower spikes once flowering has finished.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally, as this feeds the bulb for the following year's flowers.
  • Apply a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage strong bulbs.

Top Tip:
Plant near doorways, paths or seating areas where the wonderful fragrance can be fully appreciated throughout spring.
