One of the earliest and brightest jewels of the spring garden, Iris reticulata 'Alida' produces exquisite sky-blue flowers with deep blue falls and brilliant golden-yellow markings, flowering when little else is in bloom.

A much-loved Dutch selection, 'Alida' is admired for its fresh, icy-blue colouring, which brings a welcome splash of brightness to late winter and early spring. Each elegant bloom features broad, pale blue standards and darker blue falls beautifully highlighted by a vivid yellow crest and delicate white markings. The flowers are lightly fragrant and rise above slender, grass-like foliage, creating a charming display in even the smallest of gardens.

Perfect for rock gardens, alpine beds, containers, window boxes and the front of borders, 'Alida' is exceptionally easy to grow and performs reliably year after year. It naturalises well in sunny, well-drained positions, gradually forming attractive clumps that become more impressive with age.

Flowering alongside snowdrops, crocuses and winter aconites, Iris reticulata 'Alida' is an excellent choice for bringing colour, fragrance and cheer to the earliest days of the gardening season.

A delightful dwarf iris that combines elegance, reliability and exceptional early-season colour.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Iris reticulata bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade with well-drained soil. They are ideal for rock gardens, containers, raised beds, gravel gardens and the front of borders.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to ensure excellent drainage. Incorporate compost before planting if required.

Watering:
Water well after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Iris reticulata requires very little watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed to establish and naturalise.
  • Avoid excessively wet soil during summer dormancy.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Alida' in groups near paths or entrances where its delicate sky-blue flowers can be admired up close during the first weeks of spring.
