A delightful miniature iris, Iris reticulata 'Pixie' produces exquisite soft lavender-blue flowers with vivid golden-yellow markings, bringing a welcome splash of colour to the garden in the very earliest days of spring.

This charming dwarf variety is prized for its delicate colouring and compact habit. Each elegant bloom features pale violet-blue standards and deeper blue falls, beautifully highlighted by a bold golden crest and fine white markings that guide early pollinating insects to the flower. The blooms are lightly fragrant and appear just above slender, grass-like foliage, creating a jewel-like display when little else is in flower.

Perfect for rock gardens, alpine beds, containers, window boxes and the front of borders, 'Pixie' is one of the easiest early-flowering bulbs to grow. Given well-drained soil, it will naturalise happily, returning each year with increasing vigour and producing ever larger clumps.

Flowering alongside snowdrops, crocuses and winter aconites, Iris reticulata 'Pixie' is an ideal choice for brightening the closing weeks of winter and welcoming the arrival of spring.

A charming, reliable and beautifully coloured dwarf iris that deserves a place in every spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Iris reticulata bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade with well-drained soil. They are ideal for rock gardens, containers, raised beds, gravel gardens and the front of borders.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to ensure excellent drainage. Incorporate compost before planting if required.

Watering:
Water well after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Iris reticulata requires very little watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed to establish and naturalise.
  • Avoid excessively wet soil during summer dormancy.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts or in containers close to your home where the delicate flowers and subtle fragrance can be enjoyed at the very start of spring.
