A true classic among Dutch Irises, Iris hollandica 'Blue Magic' produces elegant blooms of rich royal blue with brilliant golden-yellow markings, bringing striking colour and graceful form to the late spring and early summer garden.

The beautifully shaped flowers feature deep sapphire-blue standards rising above broad velvety falls, each highlighted by a vivid golden blaze that acts as a beacon for bees and other pollinating insects. Held on tall, slender stems above neat, sword-like foliage, the blooms seem to float above surrounding plants, adding both height and elegance to borders.

Dutch Irises have been cultivated since the late 19th century and are renowned for their exceptional performance as cut flowers. 'Blue Magic' is particularly valued for its strong stems, long vase life and richly coloured blooms, making it a favourite with both florists and gardeners. Its vivid blue flowers pair beautifully with white alliums, peonies, geums and early summer perennials.

Easy to grow and wonderfully reliable, Iris hollandica 'Blue Magic' thrives in sunny borders, gravel gardens and cutting gardens, returning year after year with little attention.

A superb Dutch Iris that combines timeless elegance, rich colour and outstanding garden performance.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Dutch Iris bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil is still warm enough for roots to establish before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Dutch Irises thrive in borders, gravel gardens and cutting gardens where they receive plenty of sunlight.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10 cm (4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to improve drainage. Incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Dutch Irises need very little additional watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage strong bulbs for the following year.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed where possible to establish larger clumps over time.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous groups amongst white alliums or soft cream perennials to create a striking contrast that showcases the rich blue flowers.
