Planting Instructions
When to Plant:
Plant in autumn, ideally between late September and early November, before the first hard frost.
For Pots (Layered Lasagne Planting)
- Choose a large container (at least 30cm deep with drainage holes).
- Add a layer of crocks or gravel at the bottom for drainage, then fill with a good quality peat-free bulb compost to about 20cm from the top.
- Plant the bulbs in layers, deepest first:
- Bottom Layer (deepest): Camassia Silk River – approx. 20cm deep
- Middle Layer: Tulip Queen of Night and Narcissus Toto – approx. 15cm deep
- Upper Layer: Chionodoxa Violet Beauty – approx. 8cm deep
- Top Layer: Crocus Jeanne d’Arc – approx. 5–7cm deep
- Stagger the bulbs in each layer so they don’t sit directly above one another.
- Fill in with compost between layers and to the top, firm gently, and water well.
- Place pots in a sheltered, sunny spot and keep moist through winter. Once growth appears in spring, feed fortnightly.
For Borders (Layered Lasagne Planting)
- Select a well-drained spot in full sun or light shade.
- Dig a hole approximately 25–30cm deep and wide enough to accommodate all bulbs.
- Layer the bulbs as described above, covering each layer with 3–5cm of soil.
- Water well after planting.
- Leave undisturbed and top-dress in early spring with compost or bulb fertiliser.
Tips:
- Use fresh, firm bulbs and plant promptly in autumn (Sept–Nov).
- Taller bulbs (Tulip & Camassia) will rise through the early bloomers for a stunning multi-stage display.
- Protect pots from severe frost by insulating or placing in a sheltered position.
