Planting Instructions
When to Plant:
Plant in autumn, ideally between late September and early November, before the first hard frost.
For Pots (Layered Lasagne Planting)
- Choose a deep container – at least 30–35cm deep, with good drainage holes.
- Add a layer of crocks or gravel to the bottom for drainage, then fill with multipurpose compost up to about 10 cm from the rim.
- Bottom layer (deepest):
- Tulipa Akebono (largest bulb)
- Plant 20–25cm deep.
- Middle layer:
- Anemone coronaria Mount Everest and Narcissus Pipit
- Soak anemone corms overnight, then plant both 10–15cm deep.
- Top layer:
- Muscari aucheri Blue Magic and Crocus Ruby Giant
- Plant 5–10cm deep.
- Position bulbs so they are not directly on top of each other, spacing evenly.
- Fill with compost to just below the rim.
- Water well after planting and keep the pot in a sheltered spot.
- Protect from hard frost if needed (e.g. fleece or move to an unheated greenhouse).
For Borders (Layered Lasagne Planting)
- Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-drained soil.
- Loosen the soil and dig a planting area about 30cm deep.
- Layer bulbs as above:
- Tulips deepest, then narcissus and anemones, and finally muscari and crocus.
- Cover each layer with soil before adding the next.
- Water in well.
Tips:
- Label your pots if planting multiple collections.
- Use bulb fibre or enriched compost for best results.
- After flowering, allow foliage to die back naturally before removing.
This lasagne method gives a long, beautiful display in both pots and garden beds.
