Planting Instructions
When to Plant:
Plant in autumn, ideally between late September and early November, before the first hard frost.
For Pots (Layered Lasagne Planting)
- Choose a deep pot (at least 30–35 cm deep) with good drainage holes.
- Add crocks or gravel to the bottom for drainage.
- Fill halfway with compost (use a free-draining, peat-free multipurpose compost).
- Bottom Layer – Tulipa Orange Emperor:
Place bulbs pointed end up about 20 cm deep, spaced apart but not touching. - Middle Layer – Hyacinthoides Alba Maxima & Muscari White Magic:
Cover the tulips with 5–7 cm of compost. Plant hyacinthoides and muscari bulbs around 10–12 cm deep. - Top Layer – Crocus Golden Yellow & Chionodoxa Alba:
Cover the middle layer with another 5 cm of compost, then place crocus and chionodoxa bulbs around 5–8 cm deep. - Top up the pot with compost to just below the rim, firm lightly, and water thoroughly.
- Position:
Place the pot in a sheltered outdoor spot. Once shoots appear, move to a sunny area to encourage flowering.
For Borders (Layered Lasagne Planting)
- Pick a well-drained site in full sun or light shade.
- Loosen the soil to a depth of at least 25–30 cm, removing weeds and mixing in compost if needed.
- Layered Planting (optional in deeper soils):
- Tulips at 20 cm depth.
- Hyacinthoides and Muscari at 10–12 cm.
- Crocus and Chionodoxa at 5–8 cm.
Alternatively, plant in groups with natural spacing and varying depths for a more informal look.
- Space bulbs 5–10 cm apart, depending on size.
- Cover with soil, firm gently, and water well.
- Leave undisturbed through winter. Growth begins in early spring with flowers emerging in succession.
Tips:
- Raise pots off the ground in winter to prevent waterlogging.
- Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulbs for the following year.
- Replace or top up compost in pots annually for best performance.
