A symphony of spring that rises in beauty with each passing week. The overture begins in February, as the delicate blooms of Crocus tommasinianus ‘Whitewell Purple’ shimmer like amethyst jewels. Soon, golden notes of Narcissus ‘Tête-à-Tête’ dance among the sweet fragrance of Hyacinthus ‘City of Haarlem’, filling March with light and perfume. As the season deepens, the rich velvet tones of Tulip ‘Negrita’ take centre stage, before the grand finale of May — the ethereal elegance of Tulip ‘White Triumphator’, tall and luminous. Together, these layers compose a crescendo of colour, fragrance, and grace from the first whispers of spring to its glorious climax.

Carefully arranged for sequential flowering, this lasagne offers weeks of evolving beauty, perfect for pots or small borders where space is precious but impact is desired.

Planting Instructions

For Pots & Containers

  1. Choose a container at least 30–40 cm deep with drainage holes.
  2. Add a layer of crocks or gravel at the base for drainage, then fill with free-draining compost (mix in a little grit if heavy).
  3. Plant the bulbs in layers:
    • Base (deepest, ~20–25 cm): Tulip ‘White Triumphator’
    • Second Layer (~15–18 cm): Tulip ‘Negrita’
    • Middle Layer (~12 cm): Hyacinthus ‘City of Haarlem’
    • Upper Layer (~10 cm): Narcissus ‘Tête-à-Tête’
    • Top Layer (~5–8 cm): Crocus ‘Whitewell Purple’
  4. Cover each layer with compost before adding the next.
  5. Water well after planting, then keep moist but not soggy over winter.

Tip: Place pots in a sheltered spot to avoid waterlogging and to prolong flowering.

For Borders

  1. Select a sunny to partially shaded site with fertile, well-drained soil.
  2. Dig a generous hole to the depth of your deepest bulbs (~20–25 cm).
  3. Place the tulips at the bottom, cover with soil, then arrange the hyacinths and narcissi above, finishing with the crocus near the surface.
  4. Allow a little space between bulbs so they are not directly above one another, creating a natural spread.
  5. Firm the soil back, water thoroughly, and mulch lightly to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Tip: Group bulbs in clusters of at least 5–7 for each variety to create rich “drifts” of colour through your borders.
