One of the most unusual and captivating spring bulbs, Muscari comosum, commonly known as the Tassel Hyacinth, produces extraordinary flower spikes unlike any other Muscari. Elegant clusters of fertile purple-brown flowers are crowned by a flamboyant tuft of vivid violet-blue sterile blooms, creating the appearance of a feathery tassel dancing above the border.

Native to the sun-drenched meadows, vineyards and rocky hillsides of the Mediterranean, Muscari comosum has been admired for centuries for its architectural beauty and natural charm. The lower fertile flowers open first in rich bronze-purple tones, while the spectacular tuft of electric blue-violet flowers at the top remains upright, giving the plant its unmistakable silhouette and common name.

Flowering later than most grape hyacinths, it extends the Muscari season well into late spring and early summer. The unusual flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, while their airy habit adds height, movement and interest to mixed borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic plantings.

Easy to grow and exceptionally drought tolerant once established, Muscari comosum naturalises readily in free-draining soil, returning each year in ever more impressive clumps. It combines beautifully with alliums, Camassias, ornamental grasses and species tulips, bringing a touch of Mediterranean elegance to the garden.

A truly remarkable heirloom species whose exotic flower spikes never fail to attract admiration.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Muscari comosum bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil is still warm enough for roots to establish before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Tassel Hyacinths are ideal for gravel gardens, sunny borders, wildflower meadows and naturalistic planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10 cm (4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to ensure excellent drainage before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Muscari comosum is drought tolerant and usually only requires watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering to replenish the bulbs.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed where possible to naturalise into larger colonies.
  • Divide congested clumps every few years if required.

Top Tip:
Plant among ornamental grasses, species tulips or alliums where the unusual tasselled flower heads can rise naturally above neighbouring plants for maximum impact.
