Few flowers capture the magic of winter quite like Narcissus 'Paperwhite'. Renowned for its pure white blooms and wonderfully sweet fragrance, this classic indoor narcissus has been brightening homes for centuries. Exceptionally easy to grow, it requires no chilling period and can be brought into flower in just a few weeks, making it one of the most popular bulbs for Christmas and winter displays.

A member of the Tazetta group, 'Paperwhite' produces clusters of up to 10–15 elegant, star-shaped flowers on each sturdy stem. The pristine white petals surround a small creamy-white cup, creating a refined, timeless appearance that complements any interior. The blooms are intensely fragrant, filling a room with their unmistakable perfume and making them a favourite for festive decorations and fresh floral arrangements.

Flowering from December through March, depending on planting time, 'Paperwhite' is ideal for growing indoors in decorative pots, bowls or bulb vases. Unlike most daffodils, it requires no cold treatment and can be planted at intervals throughout autumn and winter for a succession of beautifully scented flowers.

In the mildest parts of the UK it may also be grown outdoors in a warm, sheltered position with excellent drainage, although it is best enjoyed as an indoor flowering bulb.

An elegant winter classic that fills your home with fragrance, beauty and the promise of spring.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bulbs from September through December. For a continuous display of flowers throughout winter, plant fresh pots every two to three weeks.

Growing Indoors (Recommended):
Plant bulbs into decorative pots or bowls filled with good-quality multipurpose compost, positioning the bulbs close together but not touching. Leave the top third of each bulb exposed above the compost.

  • Water after planting until the compost is evenly moist.
  • Place the pot in a bright, cool room.
  • No chilling period is required.
  • Turn the pot regularly to keep stems growing straight towards the light.
  • Keep the compost lightly moist throughout flowering.

Growing Outdoors:
In mild parts of the UK, plant in a sunny, sheltered position with free-draining, fertile soil.

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Leave 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) between bulbs.
  • Protect bulbs from prolonged winter wet and severe frost in colder regions.

Aftercare:

  • Deadhead faded flowers.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Bulbs forced indoors can be planted outside afterwards, although they may take a year or two to regain flowering strength.

Top Tip:
Plant several bowls at fortnightly intervals from autumn onwards to enjoy a continuous succession of beautifully scented flowers throughout the festive season and into spring.
