Bold, luxurious and impossible to ignore, Narcissus 'Dick Wilden' is one of the finest double daffodils ever introduced. Its enormous, richly ruffled golden-yellow blooms resemble miniature peonies, bringing sumptuous colour and texture to the spring garden.

Introduced in the 1960s, this award-winning variety has remained a firm favourite thanks to its spectacular fully double flowers. Layer upon layer of crimped golden petals form an impressive bloom that can reach up to 10cm (4 inches) across, creating a striking display unlike the classic daffodil shape. The flowers are lightly fragrant and are carried on strong stems that make them equally valuable in the garden and as outstanding cut flowers.

Flowering from March into April, 'Dick Wilden' is perfect for sunny borders, cottage gardens, patio containers and cutting gardens. Its rich golden flowers pair beautifully with blue Muscari, Camassias, white tulips and purple wallflowers, creating dramatic spring combinations full of contrast and texture.

Recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, this dependable variety returns reliably each spring, producing increasingly impressive clumps when left undisturbed.

A spectacular double daffodil whose richly ruffled blooms bring elegance, drama and lasting beauty to every spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil remains warm enough for strong root development before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Dick Wilden' is ideal for borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens and patio containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and grit if required to ensure good drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, daffodils generally require little additional watering except during prolonged dry periods.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage healthy bulbs and abundant blooms the following spring.

Top Tip:
Plant in groups where the large, fully double flowers can be admired up close, or cut a few stems for long-lasting indoor arrangements that resemble golden peonies.
