Delicate, fragrant and beautifully elegant, Narcissus 'Pipit' is a charming multi-flowering daffodil that brings subtle sophistication to the spring garden. Its graceful blooms emerge in soft primrose-yellow before gradually fading to creamy white, creating a changing display of colour that lasts for weeks.

Introduced by the renowned Dutch breeder J.W.A. Lefeber in 1944, 'Pipit' has become one of the finest Jonquilla daffodils, admired for its exceptional fragrance and graceful habit. Each slender stem carries 2–5 flowers, with broad creamy-yellow petals surrounding a small, neatly flared trumpet. As the blooms mature, both the petals and trumpet soften to creamy white, giving the plant an ever-changing, elegant appearance.

Flowering from April into May, 'Pipit' is perfect for borders, containers, gravel gardens and naturalising in sunny locations. The sweetly scented flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects and are outstanding for cutting, filling the home with their delightful perfume.

Recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Pipit' combines beautifully with blue Camassias, Muscari, tulips and other late spring bulbs, adding fragrance and understated elegance to any planting scheme.

A graceful heirloom daffodil whose changing colours and sweet perfume make it a treasured addition to every spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus bulbs in autumn, between September and November, while the soil is still warm enough for roots to establish before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Pipit' is ideal for borders, cottage gardens, containers, gravel gardens and naturalising beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and grit if required to ensure good drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, bulbs require very little watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage strong bulbs and reliable blooms the following spring.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts near paths, entrances or seating areas where the beautifully scented flowers can be fully appreciated during spring.
