Delightfully different and full of charm, Narcissus 'Julia Jane' is a beautiful Hoop Petticoat Daffodil (RHS Division 10), admired for its elegant, oversized trumpet and delicate, star-like petals.

Unlike traditional daffodils, 'Julia Jane' produces large, flared funnel-shaped trumpets in soft creamy-yellow to luminous lemon-yellow, surrounded by tiny, tapering outer petals that seem to dance behind the flower. This distinctive form gives the blooms the appearance of miniature golden petticoats, making them one of the most unusual and enchanting daffodils for the spring garden.

Flowering from early to mid-spring, this compact variety is perfect for rockeries, alpine gardens, containers and the front of borders. Its dwarf habit also makes it an excellent choice for naturalising in short grass or gravel gardens, where it gradually forms charming colonies over time.

Like all members of the Bulbocodium Group, 'Julia Jane' thrives in a sunny, well-drained position and is remarkably easy to grow. The cheerful flowers are highly attractive to early bees and provide valuable colour at a time when the garden is just beginning to awaken.

A delightful miniature daffodil whose unique flower shape brings elegance, character and lasting spring beauty to gardens of every size.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus bulbocodium bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes and while the soil remains workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade with well-drained soil. 'Julia Jane' is ideal for rockeries, alpine gardens, raised beds, containers and naturalising in short grass.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to ensure excellent drainage. Mix in compost if soil is poor.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, only water during prolonged dry spells during active growth.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering.
  • Remove faded blooms to keep displays tidy.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed so they can naturalise and gradually form larger clumps.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous groups amongst species crocuses, miniature iris and dwarf tulips for a beautiful succession of spring colour.
