Narcissus poeticus var recurvus

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and fragrant daffodils ever introduced, Narcissus poeticus var. recurvus, often known as the Pheasant's Eye Daffodil, is a timeless botanical species that has graced European gardens for centuries. Classified as a Species Narcissus (RHS Division 13), it is admired for its exquisite simplicity, intoxicating perfume and exceptional longevity.

Each elegant flower features pristine pure white petals surrounding a small, flattened golden-yellow eye edged with a brilliant ring of scarlet-red. The flowers are lightly reflexed, giving them a graceful, refined appearance that perfectly complements their sweet, rich fragrance. Blooming later than most daffodils, they provide valuable colour and scent when many other spring bulbs are beginning to fade.

Native to the mountain meadows of central and southern Europe, Narcissus poeticus var. recurvus thrives in borders, meadows, woodland edges and naturalistic plantings, where it gradually forms impressive colonies over time. Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus poeticus bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes and while the soil remains workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Ideal for borders, woodland gardens, meadows and naturalising beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

• Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
• Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
• Soil Prep: Improve the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Add grit if drainage is poor.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, additional watering is generally only required during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

• Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering.
• Remove faded flowers if seed is not required.
• Leave established clumps undisturbed to encourage natural multiplication.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts beneath deciduous trees or through meadow grass where the wonderfully fragrant flowers can naturalise and create a spectacular late spring display.
