Graceful, elegant and wonderfully fragrant, Narcissus 'Thalia' is widely regarded as one of the finest Triandrus Daffodils (RHS Division 5) ever introduced. Often affectionately known as the Orchid Narcissus, this award-winning variety is treasured for its pure white flowers, refined beauty and exceptional garden performance.

Each slender stem carries 2–4 pristine white, nodding blooms, their petals gracefully reflexed to create a delicate, almost orchid-like appearance. The pure white flowers emerge with a subtle ivory tint before opening fully to luminous white, bringing freshness and sophistication to the spring garden. Their sweet, gentle fragrance adds another layer of charm, making them equally delightful in the garden or as cut flowers.

Flowering in mid to late spring, 'Thalia' is a vigorous and dependable variety that gradually forms elegant clumps, returning reliably year after year. Its graceful habit makes it perfect for woodland gardens, cottage borders, containers and naturalising beneath deciduous trees, where the flowers seem to float effortlessly above the foliage.

Recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Thalia' is one of the most versatile daffodils available, pairing beautifully with bluebells, Muscari, Tulips, Brunnera and spring-flowering Anemones.

A timeless favourite whose elegance, fragrance and pure white blooms have made it one of the world's most loved daffodils.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes and while the soil remains workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Thalia' thrives in borders, woodland gardens, containers and naturalised areas beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve poor soils with compost or well-rotted organic matter. In heavy soils, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, additional watering is only needed during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering.
  • Remove spent flower heads if seed is not required.
  • Leave clumps undisturbed to encourage natural multiplication and stronger flowering each year.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts beneath deciduous trees or amongst blue Muscari and Brunnera for an elegant woodland display that returns more beautifully each spring.
