Delicate yet determined, Scilla siberica brings a splash of vivid blue to the garden just as winter begins to release its grip. Among the earliest bulbs to bloom, its nodding, sapphire-blue flowers emerge in drifts, carpeting borders, lawns, and woodland edges with an almost magical intensity. Each slender stem holds bell-shaped blooms that shimmer in the low spring light, creating a sea of colour beneath bare branches or among awakening perennials. Native to the mountainous regions of Russia and the Caucasus, this hardy bulb is remarkably resilient — thriving in cold climates and naturalising effortlessly over time. Plant in generous groups for a natural effect; over the years, you’ll be rewarded with ever-larger displays as it multiplies gently.

A favourite of pollinators and a joy to behold, Scilla siberica combines elegance with reliability — a true gem for any spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a well-drained spot in full sun or partial shade. Scilla siberica is happy in borders, rockeries, and lawns, and will thrive under deciduous trees where spring light is plentiful.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs 10cm (4") deep.
  • Spacing: Allow 5–8cm (2–3") between bulbs.
  • Postion: Place bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards.

Aftercare:
Once established, Scilla siberica will return and multiply year after year with little intervention. Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb for next season.

TIP: For a natural look, gently scatter the bulbs by hand and plant them where they land. They look particularly effective when planted in generous drifts.
