A true showstopper, Tulipa 'Strawberry Romanoff' is an exquisite lily-flowered tulip that transforms dramatically as it blooms. Opening in soft ivory-yellow with delicate blush-pink edges, each elegant flower gradually matures into crisp white, beautifully outlined with vibrant strawberry-red to cherry-pink margins. This remarkable colour change means the display becomes more striking with each passing day, offering weeks of evolving beauty.

Belonging to the elegant Lily-Flowered Tulip group, 'Strawberry Romanoff' features long, slender petals with gracefully pointed, reflexed tips. As the flowers open fully in sunshine, they form a stunning six-pointed star, adding movement and sophistication to borders and containers alike.

Flowering during mid to late spring, the tall, slender stems make this variety exceptional for cutting, while its graceful shape creates a beautiful contrast amongst more traditional tulips. Planted in drifts or mixed with whites, soft pinks or deep burgundy tulips, 'Strawberry Romanoff' creates a truly elegant display.

Perfect for borders, patio pots and cutting gardens, this outstanding variety combines graceful form with ever-changing colour, making it one of the most captivating tulips of the season.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa 'Strawberry Romanoff' bulbs during autumn (September–December), before the ground freezes. Cooler soil temperatures encourage strong root development for beautiful spring flowers.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position with fertile, well-drained soil. Lily-flowered tulips perform best in sheltered positions where their elegant blooms are protected from strong winds. They are ideal for borders, patio containers and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils by adding horticultural grit and compost to improve drainage and prevent bulbs sitting in wet soil during winter.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting if the soil is dry. Thereafter, rainfall is usually sufficient until spring. During prolonged dry spells in spring, water occasionally to encourage strong flowering.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Feed with a high-potash fertiliser as shoots emerge in spring.
  • Remove faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering so the bulbs can replenish their energy.
  • In heavier soils, bulbs may benefit from lifting and storing dry after the foliage has died back.

Top Tip:
Plant alongside white Narcissus, purple Alliums or deep burgundy tulips such as 'Paul Scherer' for a sophisticated late spring display. The changing colours also make 'Strawberry Romanoff' one of the finest tulips for floral arrangements.
