A delightful botanical tulip with understated elegance, Tulipa batalinii 'Honky Tonk' produces beautifully shaped, star-like flowers that open in soft creamy yellow before gradually maturing to warm primrose with subtle apricot and peach tones as they age.

Belonging to the Species Tulip group, 'Honky Tonk' is descended from wild tulips native to the rocky hillsides of Central Asia. Unlike many larger hybrid tulips, this charming variety has a wonderfully natural appearance and is particularly valued for its reliability and ability to return year after year in favourable conditions.

The slender, blue-grey foliage provides the perfect backdrop to the graceful blooms, which open wide in sunshine to reveal their elegant star-shaped form. Compact in habit, it is ideal for the front of borders, alpine gardens, rockeries, gravel gardens and patio containers, where its subtle colouring can be appreciated up close.

A recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM), 'Honky Tonk' is both easy to grow and exceptionally rewarding. It is also attractive to bees and other early pollinating insects, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.

Small in stature but big on charm, this beautiful species tulip is perfect for naturalistic planting and collectors alike.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa batalinii bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December, while the soil remains workable and before it freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Species tulips are particularly well suited to rockeries, gravel gardens, alpine beds, containers and the front of sunny borders, where drainage is excellent.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10 cm (4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve drainage by adding horticultural grit to heavy soils. Incorporate a little compost if the soil is poor.

Watering:
Water after planting to settle the soil. Once established, species tulips require very little additional watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers if seed is not required.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally to feed the bulb for next year's display.
  • Avoid lifting unless necessary, as species tulips often naturalise well when left undisturbed.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts among gravel or low-growing alpine plants, where the delicate flowers can open fully in the spring sunshine and return year after year.
