Graceful, fragrant and wonderfully natural, Tulipa sylvestris, commonly known as the Wild Tulip, is one of Europe's oldest cultivated tulips and remains a treasured favourite for naturalising in gardens.

Its elegant, nodding buds open into star-shaped, golden-yellow flowers with gently pointed petals, often flushed with green on the outside. On warm, sunny days the blooms open wide, releasing a delicate sweet fragrance that attracts bees and other early pollinating insects before closing again in the evening or during dull weather.

Unlike many modern hybrid tulips, Tulipa sylvestris is a true botanical species that has the ability to naturalise and multiply in favourable conditions. Native to southern Europe and long associated with traditional orchards, meadows and woodland edges, it thrives in well-drained soil where it will gradually form beautiful drifts over the years.

Ideal for naturalising in lawns, beneath deciduous trees, wildflower gardens, gravel gardens and sunny borders, this charming species brings a relaxed, timeless elegance to the spring garden.

A wonderful choice for gardeners looking for a reliable perennial tulip that combines beauty, fragrance and excellent wildlife value.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa sylvestris bulbs in autumn (September–December) while the soil is cool and workable. Autumn planting allows the bulbs to establish strong roots before flowering in spring.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade with well-drained soil. Tulipa sylvestris is perfect for naturalising in lawns, beneath deciduous trees, woodland edges, gravel gardens and informal borders.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with horticultural grit or sharp sand to ensure excellent drainage.

Watering:
Water well after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Tulipa sylvestris requires very little additional watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following year.
  • Avoid mowing naturalised areas until the leaves have completely yellowed.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed where possible, allowing them to spread naturally over time.

Top Tip:
For a truly natural effect, plant bulbs in informal drifts beneath deciduous trees or scatter the bulbs and plant them where they fall. Over time they will establish beautiful colonies of fragrant spring flowers.
