A true masterpiece of the tulip world, Tulipa 'Artist' is one of the finest Viridiflora Tulips, admired for its unique blend of warm salmon-pink petals dramatically brushed with vivid emerald-green flames. Elegant, long-lasting and wonderfully distinctive, it brings an artistic flair to the late spring garden unlike any other tulip.

Introduced in the 1940s, 'Artist' remains one of the best-loved members of the Viridiflora group. Its broad, slightly pointed petals retain their striking green markings throughout flowering—a characteristic that gives this tulip group its name. The soft coral, apricot and salmon-pink tones gradually deepen as the blooms mature, while the green feathering remains crisp and vibrant, creating an ever-changing display of colour.

Flowering in late spring, 'Artist' stands on sturdy stems above attractive grey-green foliage, making it ideal for borders, patio containers and cutting gardens. The flowers are exceptionally long-lasting both in the garden and as cut blooms, often lasting significantly longer than many other tulips.

Recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, this elegant variety pairs beautifully with purple Alliums, blue Camassias, ornamental grasses and soft pastel tulips, creating sophisticated and contemporary planting schemes.

A timeless classic that perfectly combines unusual colouring, exceptional longevity and effortless elegance.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa 'Artist' bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, once the soil has cooled but before it freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Viridiflora Tulips are perfect for borders, patio containers, formal planting and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to improve drainage, and incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. During spring, rainfall is usually sufficient, although containers may require watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it so the bulb can store energy for the following year.
  • Avoid excessive watering during summer dormancy and ensure bulbs remain in well-drained soil.

Top Tip:
Plant alongside purple Alliums, deep plum tulips or silver foliage plants to showcase the striking green flames and warm salmon colouring. The flowers also make exceptional long-lasting cut flowers.
