One of the most rewarding autumn-flowering bulbs, Colchicum byzantinum produces generous clusters of delicate lilac-pink flowers that emerge directly from the ground in early autumn, bringing vibrant colour to the garden when most summer flowers are fading.
Unlike true crocuses, Colchicums belong to the lily family and are affectionately known as Autumn Crocuses or Naked Ladies because the flowers appear before any foliage is visible. Colchicum byzantinum is particularly valued for its free-flowering nature, with each large bulb capable of producing numerous blooms, creating an impressive display from a single planting.
Native to the eastern Mediterranean, this hardy perennial has been cultivated in gardens for centuries and is prized for its ability to naturalise. In spring, broad, glossy green leaves emerge to replenish the bulb before dying back in early summer, leaving the ground clear until the spectacular autumn flowers appear.
Ideal for naturalising beneath deciduous trees, in lawns, gravel gardens, woodland settings or mixed perennial borders, Colchicum byzantinum gradually forms beautiful clumps that become more impressive with each passing year. Its nectar-rich blooms also provide a welcome late-season food source for bees and other pollinating insects.
Please note: All parts of Colchicum are poisonous if eaten. Wear gloves when handling bulbs and keep away from children and pets.
When to Plant:
Plant Colchicum bulbs as soon as they arrive in late August or September. They establish quickly and often flower just a few weeks after planting.
Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Colchicum byzantinum is perfect for borders, woodland gardens, beneath deciduous trees, gravel gardens and naturalising in grass.

Water thoroughly after planting if the soil is dry. Once established, rainfall is usually sufficient except during prolonged dry spells.
