Agapanthus ‘Black Buddhist’ is a real head-turner—an architectural African Lily with dramatically dark, almost black-purple buds that open into deep inky violet flower heads on tall, sturdy stems. It’s perfect for adding a bold, contemporary feel to sunny borders and patio pots, and it looks especially striking against silver foliage plants, ornamental grasses and pale summer flowers. Flowering in mid to late summer, it brings long-lasting colour and structure, and it’s a great choice for pollinators too.
For best results, give it warmth, sunshine and sharp drainage—Agapanthus loves to bask and really rewards a sheltered spot.
When to Plant:
Plant bare roots in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed. In milder areas, you can also plant in early autumn so roots can settle before winter.
Where to Plant:
Choose a warm, sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Agapanthus is ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens and especially large patio pots, where it often flowers brilliantly. Avoid cold, waterlogged ground in winter.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep evenly moist while establishing, then water only during prolonged dry spells. In pots, water regularly in summer, allowing excess to drain away.
Aftercare Tips:
