Elegant and refined, Agapanthus ‘Headbourne White’ is a classic garden favourite, prized for its graceful stems topped with clusters of pure white, star-shaped flowers. Rising above neat clumps of strap-like green foliage, the blooms appear in midsummer, bringing a fresh and sophisticated feel to borders, patios and container displays.

This hardy agapanthus is part of the well-loved Headbourne series, bred for improved cold tolerance, making it one of the more reliable agapanthus varieties for UK gardens. The tall flower stems create a beautiful architectural presence, while the luminous white blooms provide a striking contrast against darker foliage or colourful summer perennials.

Perfect for sunny borders, gravel gardens and large containers, Agapanthus ‘Headbourne White’ also makes an excellent cut flower, with long-lasting blooms that add elegance to summer arrangements.

Easy to grow and dependable year after year, this beautiful perennial offers height, structure and timeless summer colour, while also attracting bees and pollinators to the garden.

Supplied as divisions.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Agapanthus roots in spring when the soil begins to warm, or in early autumn while the ground is still workable. Avoid planting during hard frosts or into waterlogged soil.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Agapanthus thrives in full sun and is ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens and large containers. Containers can be particularly useful in colder areas as plants can be moved to a protected position over winter.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant with the crown just below the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space plants about 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with garden compost. In heavier soils, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water well after planting and keep the soil moist while plants establish. Once established, Agapanthus is relatively drought tolerant but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Feed in spring and early summer to encourage strong flowering.
  • Remove faded flower stems to keep plants tidy.
  • Apply a winter mulch in colder areas to protect the crown.

Top Tip:
Agapanthus often flowers best when slightly root restricted, making it an excellent choice for large pots and containers.
